The Winner of the 2023 Sydney International
Piano Competition is Jeonghwan Kim
Jeonghwan Kim first began playing the piano
at the age of six. In the following years, his numerous first prizes in
national competitions led to his admission to the Seoul Arts Center Academy for
Young Talented Musicians at just nine years old. Moving to Berlin at the age of 11, he has
continued to earn extensive recognition. Since 2017 he has been studying at the
Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler in the class of Professor Konrad Maria Engel.
His former professors include Kyuhee Kim, Leda Kim and Thomas Just. He has also
participated in masterclasses with Jakob Leuschner, Bob Versteegh and Robert
Levin. Crucial influences on his artistic
development include Stephan Imorde, Konstantin Heidrich, Stephan Forck and
Jonathan Aner. Jeonghwan has performed with the
Konzerthaus Orchester Berlin, with the Aarhus and Odense Symphony Orchestras,
and has given concerts in major halls in Berlin, Weimar, Hamburg and Aarhus,
among others. Not only will Jeonghwan receive the cash
prize of $50 000, he also won the Miriam Hyde Best Concerto post-1800 Prize and
the Eileen Joyce Best Overall Concerto Prize. As the First Prize Winner they will have

recital for the Australian Festival of Chamber Music • An
invitation to be Artistic Director of one edition of Out West Piano Fest • A

digital release immediately after the competition and a double CD release taken
from the live recordings during the competition on the Decca label • A

Jeonghwan will give their one night only
Winner’s recital across Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Canberra, Townsville and
Perth. The tour commences on the 25th of July in Melbourne at Melbourne Recital
Hall.
The Finalists
The following competitors have been selected as the finalists for the Sydney International Piano Competition. The final rounds will take place from the 18th to the 22nd of July at the Concert Hall, Sydney Opera House.
This is the final and most exhilarating week of performances, with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, that will draw together almost three weeks of competition and culminate with the announcement of the 2023 Grand First Prize Winner.
These six young pianists are among the top in the world for their generation and audiences will be treated to extraordinary piano playing and have the opportunity to hear and get to know these major talents before they become world names.
